Summer. As many songs as there are about the hottest season of the year, it must be something special – and what better time is there to share with that someone special in your life? Date nights with your spouse are important any time of the year.
Sounds Like...
Originally, the idea for this post came to me recently when I spotted the news that one of my newer favorite bands is heading into town in July and is planning a free show down near Buffalo’s waterfront. Needless to say, I was so psyched when I saw this tidbit, and I can’t wait for July to get here so the hubby and I can get out for the night and taken in some awesome tunes by the water.
This got me to thinking of all the free music offerings in and around our neck of the woods occuring during the summer. Really, if a person had a mind to, she could find a free show just about every night of the week throughout the season. The reason behind my story? Simply that a cheap and fun summer date night could involve you and your spouse taking in a free concert. Enjoy the great outdoors, watch the sunset and hold hands as you take in some tunes, all without spending a penny.
My husband and I used to do this quite often B.C. (before children), and even now we manage to get out once or twice a summer for one of these kinds of concerts.
For the Foodies
Tired of the same ol’ dinner out a la “Date Night”? There’s no rule that says dinner has to be in a sit down place. Pack it up and take it wherever you like. Picnics are a nice way to spend some quiet time with your spouse enjoying good eats in the setting of your choosing. Grab a sub to share from your favorite sandwich shop or pack a selection of cut up meats, cheeses and fruit and head to the best place in the city to catch the sunset. It’s an affordable, ultra casual, no pressure date night that’s especially suited for summer.

If the weather outside just isn’t cooperating for taking in a concert or a picnic, bring your date indoors...to a coffee shop. You don’t necessarily need to be a connisseur of the rich, dark brew to enjoy one of these places; many have a wide variety of beverages as well as a menu of sandwiches and goodies. Make a date with your S.O. to meet up at your local coffee place and enjoy each other’s company. Enjoy some adult, kid-free conversation. Catch up on your day and week. Ask each other trivia questions. Whatever. The main point is you spending time with the one you love and not forking over a ton of dough to do it.
Summer is a great time to head out for some one-on-one time with your spouse. It doesn’t matter whether you take in a concert, indulge in a picnic or head to the comfortable indoors of a local coffee shop; you’re spending time with the one you love. And that’s all that really matters.
